To a Special Lady: Steve's Radio Interview and the Dedication
Out in the lobby, Linda had called Jan who was now holding her office phone closely to her ear. “Okay, I'll give it a listen,” Jan said reluctantly. She then hung up the phone and switched on the radio. She tuned it to the right station just in time to hear the show, Dave's Daily Doings, begin to air. Dave assumed his on-air voice, saying, “Good afternoon, everyone, and welcome to the show. This is your main man Big Dave, and I'm here with Steve Lowe, author of How to Become a Millionaire…Legally.”
“Ah, Hi,” Steve said directing his voice into the microphone.
“So, Steve, word on the street is your book is flying off the shelves like a Harry Potter novel on opening day. Is that true?” Big Dave asked with enthusiasm.
“Ah, yes,” Steve said uncomfortably.
“Oh, that big goof!” Jan exclaimed listening from her office.
Dave tried a new question, hoping to invigorate the atmosphere and add at least a little excitement to the show’s mood. “So, tell us, Steve, what first led you to write this book?” he prompted his reluctant guest.
“Well, I met this lady,” Steve started and then trailed off.
“Oh, what, she was your muse?” Dave asked, encouraging Steve to relax.
“Yeah, she was something special; although I didn't know it at the time.”
Dave leaned into the microphone. “So, how did she inspire you? Did she give you the seed for the idea for the book?”
Steve started and trailed off again. “No, actually, she was, back then, just a business partner. But we shared something special. I just….”
“No, I didn't,” Steve said softly. “You ever have a situation where you had something really wonderful, and you didn't know it until…”
“Until it was gone,” Dave said, finishing Steve’s thought.
“Yeah, exactly,” Steve said more confidently, coming to full term with his feelings for the first time.
Jan dropped her head. She made a quick decision. Leaving the radio on, she got up and headed for the door, but not before hearing Big Dave, say, “Dude, just about every guy has been in that situation. So, how did she help with you doing this book?”
Jan paused long enough to hear Steve’s answer. “You’ll just have to read the book's dedication,” Steve said, looking into the empty space on the wall behind Dave.
As Jan stood listening, she heard Big Dave open the front cover of the book and began to read. “‘To a special lady, the one who made me feel truly loved - Jan.’ Wow, I guess she was quite a lady.”
