Eavesdropping at the Wedding Reception
After fixing more drinks, he placed the beverages on a tray and began to move about the crowd. A lanky, beautiful woman reached for a glass just as Steve caught a snippet of the conversation between two men who were standing close by. Moving toward the two men, he repositioned the tray in his hands, out of reach of the attractive lanky woman before she could capture the drink.
Flabbergasted at his apparent rudeness, she shot him a foul look that in another setting could drop wildlife. “Well, I never!” the woman said, holding her hand to her chest.
Steve turned to the woman, “Well, you should some time; it’s loads of fun. Look, I’m sorry. Here,” he offered as he gave the gorgeous but perturbed woman her drink before continuing to move closer to the two men, determined to learn more about what they were discussing. The first man in the group said, “Yes, I found that my return was excellent.”
The second man asked, “Are you going to invest any more in the venture?”
“Well,” the first man began to speak but stopped to chew on his lip a little in thought.
Steve became impatient, shoving between the men. “Well? Are you?” he demanded.
Startled, the first man shoved at Steve, shouting, “What the - ?”
The second man tried to step between them, pointing a finger at Steve and asking, “Who are you?” At that moment, the first man lost his balance and stumbled. He bumped into the gorgeous lanky female who’d just retrieved a drink from Steve. She pitched forward and hit a food cart, and it shot toward the glowing bride, hitting her right in the behind. Losing her balance, she fell into the pool. Everyone, except Steve, of course, rushed to help her. Steve quickly took advantage of the chaos to race behind the bar, collect his coat, grab his tips from the tip jar, and slip away. He whipped out his spare phone and dialed a number. Greg immediately answered the phone. “Hey, Greg. I’m done here. Can you pick me up?” Greg sounded confused on the other end of the line. “Yeah, I know it’s early. I…sort of…Yeah.” Back inside Steve’s apartment, Steve and Greg walked toward the living room. Greg laughed, “So, shot down again, eh? Steve, for Pete's sake.” Steve was not amused. “I'm sorry! I was trying to learn more about these millionaires and how they make their money.” Greg shook his head. “Yeah, okay, Steve, I understand that. But, what about your rent? Did you manage to make any actual money?”
